The charming village of Suttons Bay is located on the Leelanau Peninsula just 16 miles north of Traverse City on an inlet off Grand Traverse Bay. It offers shelter for boaters, sandy beaches, and great shopping. The annual Suttons Bay Jazz Festival and Suttons Bay Art Show have become mainstays for many regular visitors. Northport is located eleven miles north of Suttons Bay, near the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula. This quaint village boasts a modern marina close to where Grand Traverse Bay joins Lake Michigan. Fun boutiques, an annual wine festival, and a variety of good restaurants make Northport a great place to visit. Leland is known to most people as “Fishtown.” Commercial fishing has been an important part of this wonderful Lake Michigan community for many years and still exists today, but tourism now drives the local economy. Located where Lake Leelanau empties into Lake Michigan, Leland is a beautiful place, reminiscent of the coastal villages of New England. The town of Glen Arbor rests on the Crystal River, between Glen Lake and Lake Michigan, with views of the beautiful Manitou Islands. Just down the road lies the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, just 23 miles west of Traverse City. The Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore actually runs 64 miles along the pristine shores of Lake Michigan covering more than 70,000 acres and drawing more than a million visitors each year. Additional Leelanau towns to enjoy include Empire, Cedar, Maple City, Omena, and the village of Lake Leelanau. All are charming parts of the magnificent Leelanau Peninsula. |
